Rocket Girl

I was listening to this song the other day, feeling sorry for myself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
(I have it playing on my ipod when I run...thinking the title alone should inspire me to run faster....having "rocket" in the title and all.
{I know it doesn't work when I look at my pace, but it was an idea to inspire speed...})
Anyway.
My mood has been melancholy as of late.
I haven't been inspired, or felt a moment of elation in anything that normally thrills me,
and I feel as though I have lost my "upbeat-ness" somewhere out there.
I feel  I'm that Rocket Girl....traveling away into far unknown places.....
or places that aren't usually seen by the average person.
~if only in my mind.~
How about China?
I want to run along the Great Wall.....
take in the gardens and walk the bridges.
Then there are the plains of Africa.
A safari or 2....catching glimpses of never-ending plains where exotic animals roam.
And Mt. Kilimanjaro is on my list to hike.
Even a trip "Down by the Bay" would be lovely.
A row in my Rowboat amongst the reeds and cattails....
catching sight of a fish leaping from the water or strange birds diving for lunch.
My dream....Italy.
Where laundry is hung between homes and the pieces flutter above your head in the sunlight.
Flowers in the open window sills....music and wine and the best of Italian food.
The Swiss Alps.
I've wanted to go there ever since I was in Grade 6 and had to do a report on those mountains.
To climb, or ski, or just listen to a yodel as the sound bounces between the peaks.
After the song ends and the pictures in my mind slow down a bit...
I stop.
And realize something.
All those places I dream of.....yes....are actually out there somewhere.
But those scenes can be found right here in my backyard.
And I get to see them all for free.
~~~~~

~all photos above taken from right here...
where I  already am.~

I think sometimes that just happens. Then it is like we suddenly wake up to all of the joy around us, and then we wonder how we wandered off the path.
I think it is just life. I am glad you are back from your other lands.
Home is a nice place to visit.

The only problem with running in China is sucking in all that dirty air... and in Africa, you get one of those cats behind you and you'll run like you've never run before (just doing my part to help you beat melancholy)!

I like that foggy morning photo

It's so nice to dream... and appreciate what you have, too!

Well said and so lovely. I hear you - melancholy. I've been trying to shake it off too, lately. Haven't quite figured out how... Beautiful photos as always. :)

Very true. Very true... And your part of the world is one of the most beautiful that I have visited (and I have been to all the others you mentioned above)... At the end of the day - it's who you are with wherever you are that makes it all special...

All very true. The year before I moved to Europe, I met a woman who had lived in Germany for over twenty years. I remember being in awe of her life and asking her if it is wonderful living abroad.

Her answer was so simple. "After awhile, it's just another place, like any other."

Her words have haunted me over the years. And sometimes I've wished I'd listened.

Oh Dawn this is beautiful I love your words they hit home with many of us myself included. You live in a gorgeous place and we all need to dream of other travels that may or may not be in our future. The trick is exactly what you describe. Dream!!! Great post Dawn. I truly think you are Rocket Girl. Be happy my friend this soon will pass. :)

I mean the melancholy not the dream or the view :). B

I think the beginning of the darker days seasons can bring about the melancholy. I feel it too this time of year.

You are experiencing melancholy? Welcome to the human race!

But then, you seem to be dealing with it very nicely!

Most excellent.

The other day my friend was describing some mountain camping she did earlier this year. She said it wasn't like being in Oregon at all. She felt magically transported to another state or country in it's beauty and I realized just how many places in Oregon I have yet to explore before I start setting my dreams on far away places.

Very nice to have all so close. Traveling through the Alps my fisrst time i showed all in the train who was a tourist hanging out the window with my ooohs and aaahs.There is a charm in Italy that can only be found there, although I make some of the best Italian foods.One town all the ladies had their numbers from the fish market in hand, but stood on the dock when the buyer unloaded to see what they would like best before returning with him to the store.

A lovely post and a comment on being human. Not all of us see what is right in front of us and dream of escaping to far away places, thinking they will make us and our lives better.

Hi Dawn,

I enjoyed your post today and also your photographs, they are wonderful.

I think that there really is no place like home, is there?

I moan and complain about the rain here in Ireland but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Take care of yourself and enjoy your lovely surroundings.

My motivation is very far away, I need to take a trip and go and find it somewhere I don't even know where to begin to look for it. Thanks for the post, it was very uplifting indeed.

I hear you. I love my life, where I live, how I live. But sometimes... it's not about going somewhere different, I don't think. I don't really know. Probably just hormones. :)

Lovely photos, really. Well-written post, dear.

I have been in 'unknown places', at least to me, for 6 months now. I'm writing this from New Caledonia, a place I'm not even sure I heard of 6 months ago. I'm having wonderful experiences, but in the end, my heart and favorite memories belong at home. P.S. Love the misty shot!
