Flight Fear

So the Family went to an Air Show a couple weeks ago.
I stayed home.
~I think that was when I went on my glorious bike ride.~

Several reasons stopped me from attending with the rest of them.
Don't get me wrong- I love adventure and seeing new sights.
(Part of me even secretly thought I should go.
You only have Just One Life- right?)

But I'm truly not a fan of Flight.

You know why?
There are just too many things that can go wrong.

For instance, look at this:

~~If just ONE wire was out of place....~~

And I have NEVER been good at science....but honestly~
How IS it possible for something this large to float in the sky?
I see no feathers.

And that's just the worry from ground.
What about when you get up here?

And I now have proof that planes actually can flip over.
~I can do that well enough on my bike, thanks.~

What about the Traffic up there?
Do you realize just how many planes are in the sky above us at any given moment?
And not one traffic sign.

Then there's the matter of the parachute.
IF you are lucky enough to own one.

And you better hope they don't get tangled.

And is it me...
or does this not look like it belongs in water?
I see.....Duck.

The noise, the crowds, the stress and danger....
No~ I was happy I stayed home.

Now, if someone gave me one of these to ride....

(All above pictures were taken by my son and/or daughter...
who braved the noise and heat of the day.

Without me;)

Your kiddos did a great job with the photos! I find it amazing to watch, although I'm not a huge fan of flying myself. My dad always was though, and so I think I have a soft spot for it despite my misgivings. :)

Oh Dawn I can relate to this post I am afraid of air shows I think I watch the news too much. I love the fantastic photos and your words.
I was terrified of flying till my favourite brother moved to Vancouver. What is a girl to do? I jumped on two different planes I almost turned around and took the train back after the little one but I knew I would never live it down plus never get over this fear. I went on the big plane for five hours for the first time at the age of 54 and absolutely loved it OK except for the take off and landing. I think I did very well but you would have to ask the poor girl sitting beside me.
I went again two years later by myself and am so glad I conquered that fear. I cannot wait to go again someday. B

I'm not afraid of planes and I love air shows, but I'll be damned if I understand how a heavy steel contraption can get up in the air and stay there. just sayin...

I think I've watched one too many of those "Horrible accidents caught on film!" shows to really enjoy an airshow.
They did a great job with the photos!

That just stirs up a wish to be in the clouds with me.I love to fly and jump at it when given the chance.

finally, a chink in the armor that is Dawn! :)

i went to the Oshkosh fly-in in Wis. many years ago. it was a blast (of course i worked for an aerial photography company at the time so it was even more interesting to me at that point.)

but sounds like you enjoyed your alone time w/o crowds and noise just as well (or better!)

Good photos. But I'm a little apprehensive about going to an air show.

Nice pictures - my boys sure would've loved it - they get so excited when an airplane passes by.

Oh, you are sooooo funny! What a great post. The pictures are very well done - kudos to the kids. But your creativity really shines here. Thanks for a great laugh this morning!

The race is the 2nd, so you'll want to fly in the 1st, that is if you are willing to board one of those big flying machines :-). Oh and bring the family. I'll have a couple grills going if anyone actually shows up :-).

I'm currently having a little issue setting up the swim. It might be a late 11 am start or a 2 transition area race. I'm still working on the details and will publish the course in the next week or two.

We used to live near an small airfield where they did air shows. One Sunday we were eating lunch and heard a terrible crash ... somebody misjudged. But, "they say" it's still safer than driving in a car!

you've raised a whole family of photographers! nice shots!

texwisgirl mentioned the oshkosh fly-in which happened just last week, and during that short time its airport is the busiest in the world. but i swear, every year, some independent little plane goes down in a field or lake michigan. so, i'm kind of with you here.

Fantastic photos!

More can go wrong on the ground...I think.

You are just so cute. All of the things you do that I find I would be afraid of like swimming for hours and then getting on a bike and riding for hours and then running for hours, I just don't know how you do it, I would rather fly in one of those things without feathers than ride in a car. :) You made me laugh.

Oh yeah... I'd Definitely be on that motorcycle! Woohoo... I'd even wear my leather miniskirt for that!

As for the flying? Pass me that airplane barf bag, will you? :D

OK. You convinced me. Now I will never go to Paris or London or Florida or Africa or Italy or anywhere else, ever again. Thanks a lot.

Dawn how do you handle getting on planes for trips? I recall you went away was it last year to someplace tropical.

The photos are fantastic, your children have a great eye for photography!

The bike looks like a blast, I can just see us now with it! lol Have a fantastic evening!

These photos are stunning. Given the choice, I'd have been there. I think the jets (fighter jets) that fly over our house at times are simply awesome. I#'m like a little child running out to see them.
They are simply the coolest. thing. evah!

Your kids took great photos, Dawn! They must take after you. I, too, would have gone, but I'm an Air Force vet and was in a plane once or twice. I enjoy stuff like that. Thanks for posting their awesome photos!

"I see no feathers"... classic...

Surely you will get on a plane, though? As you said, Just One Life...

Looks like a fun airshow. I'm a fan of airplanes, although I must admit that plenty can go wrong.
The parachute shots are cool. I'm not brave enough to want to try that, though.

I don't mine flying but I'm not jumping out of a perfectly good plane.

Rick said...

Awesome shots - you've obviously added photography to their curriculum ! I've lost track of the number of times I've flown - it is a very safe way to travel although the stats on smaller planes aren't quite as reassuring.

i know, i don't get how a plane can fly...it totally stresses me out to fly.

i also don't understand how a huge boat can float.

some of life's mysteries...
