Who are YOU??

Someone asked me once how you know who you are.
I find that a frustrating question because there seems to be no definite answer.

I can be a label...a mother, daughter, friend, teacher...but does that make me ME???

I think it's all those little pieces put together- that make you who you are.
Or, at least it begins to outline the person you are.

Because after all these years of living, I'm still trying to figure out just who I am.

{Outline of Me}

1) I love water sports - this includes laying on the beach.
2) I love chocolate. Of course.
3) I plant my garden in my bare feet.
4) I wish I could be a photographer and spend all my days looking for outside things to capture on film.
5) I wish I could live outside.
6) I don't like feeling surrounded by lots of people....claustraphobic.
7) I would rather eat salty than sweet.
8) I have always wanted to go to Italy.
9) One day I want to bike across Canada. And I will.
10) Coming back from a trip...I cannot go to bed until my suitcase is unpacked- even if it is 3 in the morning.
11) I HATE a messy house...especially when it is mine!
12) I would rather clean a bathroom than cook or bake:)
13) I am very indecisive...and I hate that about me.
14) I wish I was 2 inches taller.
15) My favorite candy are Bottle Caps.
16) If I could live anywhere it would be on a mountain overlooking the ocean.
17) I am absolutely terrified of flying. TERRIFIED.
18) I've had 4 c-sections...NOT by choice.
19) I can feel very, very alone- even surrounded by people.

20) My favorite color is blue. Every single shade of blue.
21) I wish I could stay 27 forever;)
22) One day I'll run a marathon and do a Half-Ironman. Okay, maybe an actual Ironman would be fun too:)
23) I go to bed late and wake up early. I don't sleep much At All.
24) My favorite food is Mexican. And Thai. And Chinese. Oh...and I love my pizza.
25) I wrote a book 10 years ago and sent it away to get published. It's still sitting in my closet unpublished.

So........Who Are You?

Dawn, wow... that's a very good description of who you are, what you like and what your aspirations are. I'll get back to you on this one, I too stay up to late and get up to early but for now that's about it. I know that this body needs a few hours sleep!

Hey Dawn! Very thought provoking post, who am I; too complicated to try and lay it all out for sure! Can we go to see Italy together? I will hold your hand all the way over on the plane provided you hold mine, I will even wrap my legs and arms around you should the plane go down..which it will if I'm on it!!!ha ha.

I've always wanted to go to Italy too! That would be photo-taking Heaven for you, I bet (of course, I think you have to fly to get there). I enjoyed getting to know you a little more! :)

I understand what you mean about, "Who we are".. See we are everything we touch..

I want to see you on tv doing that Ironman .. Yes, I do believe that will happen one day.
Great, thought provoking write!!

Loved your description of how labels don't necessarily define who we are - but maybe at least outline "us". I think you're filling in the middle of that sketch just fine, btw.

4 C sections?! Ouch!!! God bless you, superwoman!

I can identify with many things that you are as well. I love your honesty and moxie!

Many of those points are ones I would have to write about myself (except the Ironman!!).

Also, I am nto afraid of flying. But feeling alone even surrounded by crowds of people? Oh yes. And rather cleaning that baking? Yes, too.

I understand about the book. What was it about? I really want to know. I am writing one, too. But it will probably find a place in my closet one day as well, and perhaps then they can be friends...your book and mine.

Are you seriously 27? If you are then... you go girl! Cross Canada on your bike, then take the boat to Paris and cross France, then you will be here and we can have something salty to eat. ;)

I love this list, yes I have many the same points too. I cannot decide with small stuff, I would rather clean any day over cooking too!

I love reading these 25 things about you!
the thing is some of them will change in time but that doesn't mean it isn't you.
I'm still finding out who i am. :)

great post!

What a neat post. What we do does not define us, but is a bit part of who we are. When those bits combine whether through chaos or order is when we find out who we truly are.

Dawn, thankyou for this wonderful post - I felt like I was reading something about ME. I too love my solitude and hate big groups of people. I totally agree with what floweringmama had to say.

Someday I will sit down and use your idea and write it out, it is something that takes time, I really like your list too. I wish I could sit down with you across a table and go through each one on the list and ask you about each one. 4 c-sections, really? My last child was a c section, nothing harder than that. One almost killed me. :)

a thought provoking post. i like that you define yourself on your own terms, not how other perceive or categorize you.

We are so on the same page right now. I've been working a post up in my head on this very subject. Truth be known, I have a very contradictory personality. But that is who I am.

Nice description. I think it takes quite a bit of time until we really figure out the person that we have become.

Wow, we learn a lot about you. I am with you on #10 and it isn't always appreciated by others in my house.

I realize now why I like you so much. Aside from your lovely and delicious blog posts...we are very alike.
I love your list.

Great post! I still don't know if I really know who I am. I would say I am still a work in progress. I agree with you on the photography and I wish I had more patience.

Sorry I'm late with this... it has been a busy weekend, but I did want to comment on this post.

I'm not sure I could come up with a list of who I am, because it's constantly changing. Maybe it's the 50 year-old thingy -- a time of flux.

I enjoyed learning more about you. And hey, 27 forever? Not for me. I'm enjoying the empty nest too much. :)

This immediately reminded me of a question my professor once asked me "Do you like yourself? Why?". It sounds like an easy question but I remember feeling like it was loaded. I think the easiest way to "define" yourself is to use labels, but you're right, that's not what makes you you.

Who are you, very descriptive list Dawn that lists a beautiful caring person.

Funny how we add to our list over the years, keeps life interesting :)

Nice post Dawn - gives a good image. I have absolutely no idea who I am!

Thoughtful post. I like how each of the things about you, touches or resembles each one of us. We're all different yet the same. It's part of being human, part of the social connection that we need.

And as for me and room full of people. No thanks. : )

I loved reading about who you are. I have to say, I can relate to a few of them :) Bottle caps...I haven't had those in so long...YUM!

I enjoyed your list. I chuckled, I would rather cook than clean any day of the week. If we were neighbors you could do all my cleaning and I would do all you cooking. The best of both worlds.

Dawn -

I LOVED this post! It's a common question but so difficult to answer well.

I'm with you on #20 :)

Dawn, I love these pieces of you :).
I also really want to go to Italy!! It's on my bucket list :)
I hate a messy house too, and I'd also rather clean the bathroom than clean or bake :)
I'm indecisive and I hate it too!!
Go for the bike ride across Canada. And the marathon. You can do it. My mom signed up for the three-day 60-mile breast cancer walk they have in California in the US this year, and I'm so proud of her. Inspires me to go for something big.
