tree~house hideout

When we moved out to the country, the first thing my dad did with my kids was to build a tree house. They designed and built it in this clump of trees, making sure not one tree was damaged- even cutting a hole in the roof overhang in order for the tree to continue stretching upwards.
Right now, it seems as though my kids have forgotten the hideaway. It has been sitting empty all winter- waiting for them to climb the ladder or swing on the knotted rope.
While they've forgotten it, I have remembered that it sits there empty.
So I climb the ladder.
I sit on the "balcony" and listen to the wind creak through the walls.
If I stay long enough I catch eye-level glimpses of birds returning to our trees.
The woodpecker pounds his head incessantly against the trunk, and I can't help but laugh and think....that's exactly how I feel at times.

Which is why I'm so glad I have access to this getaway.
For now.

Spring is coming- {I could hear the snow melting today}, and my kids will once again reclaim the space.
But for now...
it's my tree~house hideout.

(but can we just keep this our little secret?;)

Very cool. I appreciate leaving the birch to do what they do -- undisturbed.

I can't help but think what a different world it would be if every kid had a tree house, and every mom too. : )

We live on 40 acres here in Iowa.. When my kids were young they built a tree house down by the creek in the pasture.. It was a great place to go and read or just watch the birds. I used to go there all the time to just have peace and quiet when the kids were in school. Glad you have one too.. Many memories are built in tree houses.. Every kids dream to have one ..
Have a tiggeriffic day~! ta ta for now from Iowa:)

Every kid needs a tree house or a hide out! But we have no trees that would work for a tree house :-(

Hope you've got a good book to read out there in case you get snowed in.

I love this! And I can see you sitting there, Dawn. The woodpecker... oh yes, I can relate. Ha! hahahaha! And then, sigh. :(

I will have to take a pic of the treehouse my hubby built, but for now, I'll enjoy yours. Meet you out there this afternoon? I'll bring the cocoa, you bring the cookies...

Sometimes I feel like I'm up a tree without a house! Then I act like a woodpecker. Which doesn't help. Just hurts my head.

You're lucky to have a dad who can build a tree house! And this is a beaut. But wasn't it a bit chilly sitting up there by yourself?

Nice post, Dawn. Very fine photos of what, obviously, is much more than just a tree house!

Oh my, I'd love to hang out in there with a couple magazines and a thermos filled with hot cocoa.

A lovely get away, I have spent lots of time in them. As a kid my house sat at the edge of new development and we made frieds with all the workers so we could get the scraps to build our own house. It was a little rough but many hours were spent doing this labor of love and then time spent just hanging out in it.

A good hiding place for receiving the spring, and enjoy it from the sun and heat, once the snow is gone.
Greetings.

Beautiful! You're brave to get up there. :)

When we were little our dad built us a "tree fort" (that sat on the ground) for us to stay in while waiting for the bus to come in the morning.

It's one of the memories that I really appreciate because it shows the kind side of my dad.

Love the story....right after my own heart. Just wait a few more years. My sons are all grown, and I often go and sit in their old tree house (I won't be able to much longer, though, because it is falling apart). Now I sit there with memories of my sweet boys, and dreams of grandchildren who would breathe new life into this place.
