Dog Run

Duke~Great Pyrenees~10 weeks

Have you ever tried to train a puppy to run?
You wouldn't think it hard, but putting him on a leash and expecting him to follow doesn't just happen.

(Really...who wants to be led around on a leash?)

We must look pretty funny....
me pulling on his leash as he drags and slides along the slippery snow covered road,
all while he sits back on his haunches and determinedly pulls his head back.

I bought Duke to have as a running partner.
And my watch dog.
 {I don't want him running away on me when I need him to stay.}
When there is another dog approaching I want him to stand guard.
And when there's a moose in my way, well....sorry Duke, but I want you to be my soldier.
(all this after he grows a bit first;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I pretty much have left the Running Practice up to my "older dog"...
After 10 miles of this, he seemed to be playing Follow-the-Leader pretty well.
"Ever wonder where you'd end up if you took your dog for a walk and never once pulled
back on the leash?"
  ~Robert Brault
(of course,
I'll wonder this AFTER he learns how to walk using a leash...)
ahhh, Duke is so cute!!! So fun to have a puppy. I love that he follows your other dog too. They say that's a great way to train them! Good luck getting him to run. Once he starts, he might not stop~ :)
Have a great day!
Your Duke's picture could be a Christmas card. What an adorable dog he is. Hope he turns out to be the runner you want. I have a feeling he will do just find.
Holy crap! Ten miles? You are hard core girl! I'm proud of you and your puppies for hanging in there, especially in the cold and snow.
Just a tip -- with Buck and Sioux, I kept them on a leash for quite a while when training them to sit, lay down, heel, etc... I used a long lead (a long clothesline rope) when they were ready for more freedom.
Duke is just a big white furry snowball. He is going to be a beautiful dog. :)
Duke is adorable. And he'll make a fine running partner I'm sure.
Uh Oh. CLARIFICATION:
I didn't run 10 miles all at once with that puppy. If I had tried....he'd still be running...or being dragged;)
He is such a cute puppy and I am sure that pretty soon he will be running with you without any problem.
I used to be friends with a person who had Great P's. She showed them and everything. They're beautiful dogs, although they'd really suffer where I live during the summers.
Did you get my email saying thanks? :-)
we have one that hates her leash....and run?....she's tiny and doesn't even know what that means.
instead, she checks out every leaf and fire hydrant and stick and crack in the sidewalk.....walking with her is no quick feat !
He is so amazingly cute! I remember trying to get my husky pup to use a leash for the first time and it was so pitiful and cute at the same time.
I can't believe how far you took the little tike.It all takes time, he looks like a dilligent learner.So a dog would scare a moose?A fun post and love the last quote about letting a dog lead you.
what beautiful running companions, I love the quote and have tried it with my little dog. I now know where all the other dogs have marked their territory. :O)
To answer Robert's quote: We may have ended up in the hospital as Plugger darted in front of traffic often! All kidding aside, it would be terrible to be lead around on a leash. Next dog we get, we'll have to do better with the training.
I love the shot of the two happy dogs running together. That was a long hike!
Have a great day.
I've tried to run with my dog too and it is sooo hard! He is 90lbs though, so that might have something to do with it too! :)
I could just look at pictures of Duke all day! What a sweetie. I trained my dog to run on a leash with me starting at about 10 weeks also. She's a year now and does really well (though she still gets distracted sometimes). I'm thankful to have her as a running partner. Good luck with Duke! Keep us posted!
Oh my gosh what a cutie! I'll be he turns into a great soldier for you!
I just love how he's copy-catting (or copy-dogging) everything your other dog does! Such good pups! I hope he'll be a good runner for you. Not sure if Great Pyrenees are known for that, because I know they're great at guarding sheep and livestock (which means sitting ALL DAY!) Sounds like they're more suited to hang with me instead of you, Ms. Mover and Shaker! :)
Nice looking dogs you have there, Duke is going to be a beauty
Ah, love that top shot of Duke ! I'm still amazed at how much he looks like Sasha did as a pup - the eyes, ears, expression !
Good luck with the training (actually, YOUR training - Duke is just wondering what's taking YOU so long ! ;-)
Gracious me.. He is just a darling and I have no doubt he will chase the moose away and protect you..
My little dog is only big enough to chase away flies..lol
Enjoy Mr. Duke.. I see many years of love and joy ahead for you both :-)
OMG, he is just the most gorgeous little thing ever. Such a ball of fluff.
Beautiful, both of them. Training takes time and patience and a steady hand.
Nancy sent me your way and I certainly glad she did! I like your cute cute puppy...and actually when we got our golden retriever puppy we'd have to coax him down the sidewalk with treats because he wouldn't walk. We even had to revert to carrying him at times...what we don't do for our pets...
it was nice visiting, I think I'll stay!
What a cute pair. Love all that white hair.
That's how we do it too.
If we want to walk our Jack Russell, we have to drag her behind us or bring the big, old dog too... she'll always follow the big one.
