Weekend Moment: Fudge Fondue

You have to love weekend moments when they include chocolate.
And fruit.
And fun company to share it with.

Here's our fun we had Friday night....

The perfectly peeled pineapple. WHO in the world has patience to do this so thoroughly??? Guess. (it was not me!)

I didn't have any chocolate to melt as I usually do....so I decided to make up my own. What I ended up with was extra fudgy fudge!

And I think we also gained a few happy pounds!
Very worth it!!

Aprons and Me...

i don't know what it is about an apron.
i used to feel the apron was only in existence to represent the domesticated housewife- submitting to never-ending duties and housework, when supposedly what she should be doing is fighting for her domain in the "workworld".
i'm thinking of changing my view.
have you ever put an apron on? while wandering about in the kitchen....preparing a meal, baking, getting ready to make jam....

it's a strange thing. when i don one of these coverings i feel changed. i know it sounds odd, but i feel like i'm in a play and my role is of the one in charge- who knows what she's doing and knows who she is, and actually knows what needs to get done.
not only that....i feel like i can actually accomplish what i'm supposed to do.
all because i'm wearing an apron. (?)

why is this?
is my role really only that of "mere housewife/homemaker"?
and is there something wrong with that role?
someone needs to take charge of home life. why shouldn't that be of utmost importance as well as work-world jobs?
i wouldn't call the apron my uniform by any means....all i'm saying is that when i wrap one around me and tie up the strings at the back, pick up a spatula in one hand and read my cookbook sipping on a glass of wine while i cook an evening meal....i feel right.
my uniform fits for that time. and it's me in that moment.

i like my aprons. i may have an extra if you want to try one out?

(of course it helps that i get to wear these cute  aprons made by my mom)

Guitar Nights

I have to say that I do love my weeks as well as my weekends! One of my absolute favorite moments during the week is Guitar Nights...with my sister and dad.
None of us are "band ready" quite yet:) But we enjoy learning together and trying new songs....

When I was VERY young I tried piano. High school was the flute. When my daughter took up violin I did too so I could help her in lessons. Now, it's guitar.

I'll admit that I feel a lot more motivated learning along with others!
We'll let you know when our 1st CD comes out...hehe:)

The Weekend gone by....

Wow the weekend flew!

~Friday night I got to listen to my little trumpet player and saxaphone man play in their Band Concert.

~Saturday was The Ball....so much fun with friends! Ouch on the feet in silly dancing shoes....but it was worth it!

~Sunday we put up our Christmas tree. Too early maybe...usually December 1st is our Decorating Date but in my way of thinking....Christmas comes and goes far too quickly. I want to enjoy it for at least a month.

And now....another week. How many days til next weekend?

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Decided I would put this recipe up today....for someone out there who asked if anyone knew of an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe. A good one. This would have to be it...at least at our house:) And super easy too:

1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
 1tsp salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
3 cups oatmeal
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup raisins (or coconut, or chocolate chips....optional)

~Cream butter, sugar and eggs. Add other ingredients and roll into balls...flatten with fork and bake at 350 degress for about 15 minutes.~

Sorry I don't have any pictures to go up with this recipe. We've finished off the last batch made. I would go bake up some more, but it's really late as I type this...and I may end up eating them all...again.....
Enjoy!

Morning of Frost....

Coming down in the morning to this frost on the outside of my kitchen window, made me realize how much I love seasons. And everything that occurs inside of each one.
I can never get over how individual and unique each snow flake and frost crystal is. Each one is so beautiful in an icy sort of way.

Love the little things that take my breath away...don't you?

Favorite Weekend Moment

Such a perfect Sunday. We used to always make Sundays our "Go for Family Walk" days...but over the last long while...those type of Sundays have disappeared for one reason or another. Well this Sunday we finally had a "walk day"...and it was perfect!
We drove to our favorite walking spot and spent a couple of hours on a good long stroll together. It was my favorite weekend moment.....

The Ball

so in one week i'm actually going to a Ball.
you know...one where everyone wears ballroom dresses and dances in ballroom fashion.
i have a dress that my mom made for me years ago. one of the kinds that never seem to go out of style. at least i hope it hasn't.
today my best friend and i are going to shop for everything else we need...which is.....?

i'd like to shop for new hair. skinnier arms. more height.
i'd like to find tiny feet. long manicured fingers on small hands. straighter teeth.
i'd really like to find a store that offers 10 pounds off. in all the right places.

i think what i''m going to do though.....
is wear the dress i have- in style or not.
wear my hair up. or even let it down.
dance ....or laugh my self silly trying.
have a ball.
live life while it happens.

be me.

and i'll let you know what happens.

BREAKFAST Food

Yesterday I decided to refill my granola jar....
So here's the recipe for the (1) person out there who wanted it:

In a very large bowl add APPROXIMATELY (I don't measure a thing....but add quantities of the ingredient based on how I feel that day!)...
10 cups rolled oats
2 cups coconut
2 cups wheat germ
2 cups sunflower seeds
2 cups pumpkin seeds
2 cups cashews
2 cups flax seed
(And you don't have to add all of the above, just adjust it to what you like.)

In a smaller bowl mix together:
2-3cups maple syrup
1/2 cup oil (I use olive oil)
vanilla
cinnamon (optional)

Mix the syrup mixture into the dry ingredients and stir well.

Divide the mixture and spread it evenly into baking dishes.

Bake at 325 degress for approximately 30-40 minutes...
depending on how crunchy you like granola!

While it bakes, soak 2-3 cups of raisins and/or cranberries in apple juice.
Near the last 10 minutes of baking, add the fruit to the granola and mix in well.
Finish baking until it's as crunchy as you like.
(Note: the fruit WILL burn easily, so if it is going to bake for longer than
10 minutes more, stir every so often.)

Remove from oven and let cool.
Store in airtight containers.
I freeze any I think won't be eaten before a week is up.
(Freezes well and keeps for a long time....well...
that is if it isn't eaten of course!)

Enjoy.

Birthday Weekend

This entire weekend was spent celebrating Adam's 15 years.
He spent part of the weekend with my parents.....who make sure to take each of their grandkids for a "birthday sleepover" every time a Birthday rolls around. This meant a hockey game with dad, Wii tournaments, fly-tieing for the new fly-fishing rod they gave him, and yummy food. I'm very blessed to have parents who want to invest so much time into my kids' lives......

Bowling with family, cousins, aunt and uncle....wearing the latest in Bowling Fashion.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU, ADAM!

We are all very blessed to have you in our lives.
Hope your next year is filled with all good times, learning moments, and things that may be hard but help you grow strong in who you're supposed to be.
Love you buddy!

15 Years ago something happened.
My world changed.
I became someone different.
My focus changed, my cares shifted, I grew in other ways.....

On November 8th, 1994, I became a mom to a wonderful baby boy. My life has never been the same.
This weekend I get to celebrate a decade and a half - of wonderful happines with an amazing person.

I'll share the weekend with you on Monday.
I have to go plan for it.
It's quite the celebration!

Have a good weekend in all you do....and spend time with someone you care about and love.
Life's about just that.

Just One More Thing....

Okay, bare with me. I have one more thing I thought was pretty neat!

Did you know that a man named George de Mestral went for a walk one day back in 1948. He took his dog for a stroll through the Alps, but upon returning home, Goerge found his dog was covered with burrs. The man decided to take one of the burrs from his dog and observe it under a microscope. He was amazed at how well the burrs had attached themselves to his dog!
After studying the burr...he realized he could actually use this nuisance of a BURR....and turn it into something useful.
TADA! Velcro was invented!
Isn't that cool?!?

Loving Learning

"I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting system through which God speaks to us every hour, if only we will tune in." ~George Washington Carver (1864-1943)

This quote was brought to me by my teenage son, who thoroughly loved reading his biology lesson yesterday. And I did too!

Weekend Moments....

Another weekend just zipped by. It was a typical weekend....chores, work, lazy Sunday. But to pick my favorite weekend moment- I'd have to say it was all the moments spent with those I love.
Friday....hanging out with my teenage son- running errands, him helping me work, having a drive-thru supper at Tim Hortons.
Saturday....listening to my kids while they made our typical Saturday morning breakfast of pancakes, then watching them try to beat their own personal record of how many they could eat. (This weekend totaled over sixty between the 4 of them. Ugh. I can't eat more than one!)
Saturday night.....spending the evening at my parents place with my sister and her family. Eating mom's homemade spaghetti sauce, homemade ice cream, and DELICIOUS Caramel Popcorn Balls...homemade!
Sunday night....sitting down with my entire family and watching our favorite Sunday night show together, and laughing at all the ridiculous commercials in between the show.

I think the best times in my life are the ones where I have those I love with me. I always say I would love a day or two by myself...but when it comes right down to an empty, quiet house....I'd pick noise and chaos and happy laughter any day. Thanks for the fun-filled weekend everyone!
